    Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast. Lineker said: “It’s funny because he’s a player they paid a lot of money to bring in from Atletico Madrid.

    “He’s looked like he’s been showing a lot of things but it’s never happened. There’s no question about his quality but he’s never played consistently anywhere. So I don’t know how Aston Villa will view him.”

“There is no question he has a lot of ability. But he has never managed to secure a regular starting place anywhere. So I don’t know what Aston Villa would see in him.”

Richards added: “That is the thing. Everyone wants a marquee signing. And getting a player of that stature by name to Villa Park would be amazing.
